Within a five-day span, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers have been involved in two shootings in which police killed or injured someone, however, compared to last year, officer-involved shootings are still significantly down year-to-date.
As of July 30, 2025, IMPD officers have been involved in four shootings, with two of those four shootings resulting in the death of a person. Notably, one officer had been shot during a shooting that happened on July 29.
During the first seven months of 2024, IMPD officers had been involved in nine shootings, with seven of those shootings resulting in the death of a person. No one was injured or hit by gunfire in a police shooting that happened on June 1, 2024.
By the end of 2024, the department, which was under the leadership of Chief Chris Bailey, had been involved with 17 cases where officers shot people. This ultimately matched the same number of shootings that the department had experienced in 2023, under the leadership of now-retired Chief Randal Taylor.

In April 2024, Bailey requested that the Department of Justice conduct an independent review of the department’s shootings. That review is ongoing, and a timeline for its completion hasn’t been announced.
Last year, Bailey made it a goal of the department to address the number of officer-involved shootings that were occurring, in hopes of reducing the issue from prior years.
“We consistently talk about the number of officer-involved shootings, but what I want people to also focus on is the number of times our officers are attacked and the number of times our community is attacked. Those things matter too. Our officers have a duty to protect our community,” Bailey said after a shooting on Dec. 19, 2024. “When we need to be held accountable, we should be held accountable.”
IndyStar compiled details of all officer-involved shootings up to July for the last three years. This list does not include shootings where police fired a weapon but didn’t strike anyone
