Two young children were injured while sleeping in an early morning drive-by shooting on Thursday, July 31, Detroit police said.
Assistant Chief Eric Ewing said two black pick-up trucks pulled up to the home around 6:20 a.m. in the 7000 block of Arcola Avenue. Two passengers in those vehicles got out of the trucks and fired several rounds at the home, striking an 8-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, who were sleeping upstairs, Ewing said.
The injuries were non-life-threatening — one child was shot in the foot, the other in the arm, Ewing said. The parents and other children in the home were unharmed.
Police are seeking suspects and are asking for the public’s help in locating them.
“Again, another heinous act,” Ewing said. “We’re asking the public right now to give us help with this.”
The children shot on Thursday follow incidents where several other children were gunned down in recent weeks. Most recently, a July 27 drive-by took the life of a 6-year-old boy who was caught in the gunfire inside his home down the street from the shooting. Police are still looking for the suspects in that case as well.
“Just really, really tragic,” Ewing said.
